Senior Technical Expert in Metallurgy and Lubrication

 

The ideal candidate will have an extensive knowledge in steel and heat treatment, surface treatments, mechanical properties, failure analysis and lubrication. This role involves providing technical expertise and support in the areas of materials technology, quality assurance, and innovation, so we are seeking for a highly skilled professional, able to connect with several stakeholders, to contribute significantly in a key area for SKF!
 

Key responsibilities

  • Define, plan and follow up metallurgical and chemical investigation activities according to agreed targets, and timeframe, related to bearing applications, supporting development and manufacturing.
  • Analyze test and investigation results, write and supervise technical reports, draw conclusions, and propose improvement actions in accordance with applicable standards
  • Develop and maintain operational procedures and instructions for efficient use of test equipment and facilities to ensure reliability, accuracy, and traceability of results.
  • Collaborate with various departments to support the coordination of activities and enhance the sharing of knowledge and best practices.
  • Propose and develop new analysis procedures according to internal and international standards and specification.
  • Actively participate in local and global improvement projects related to products, service, efficiency, and organization.
  • Coach and develop the local team on technical topics and support colleagues in training activities.

 

Requirements / Qualifications

  • Degree in Material Science, Chemistry or Materials Engineering.
  • A minimum of five years' experience in the fields of Metallurgy, Metallography, Heat Treatment for Steel, and Lubricants is required, ideally with a history of laboratory-related activities
  • Experience of failure analysis in the field of steel and - or lubricants, including material properties and their performance in different application
  • Knowledge of materials science, materials structure and microstructure, mechanical and thermal properties, materials processing and fracture mechanisms, metal forming processes and technologies
  • Knowledge of laboratory instruments (e.g. stereomicroscopy, light optical microscopy, microhardness tester, X-ray diffraction, Scanning Electron Microscope, Infrared Spectrometer)
  • Extensive knowledge of steel making, heat treatment, surface treatments (e.g induction hardening) and forming operations; knowledge and experience about bearing steel, bearings products and applications will be considered as meritorious 
  • Familiarity with national and international standards related to metallurgical processes.
  • Experience with ISO 9001/ IATF 16949 Quality Management Systems (QMS).
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Office 365, and statistical data processing.
  • Proficiency in Italian and English, both written and spoken
  • Availability to travel, for short periods, is expected.

This position is located in Airasca (Turin - Italy) – on local contract - and reports to the Manager Global Laboratories Italy, who is located in Airasca (Turin).
