Salary Range: $71,000 - $80,000
Position Overview
The Transportation Specialist is responsible for planning, executing, and optimizing transportation operations to ensure timely, cost-effective, and compliant delivery of goods. This role plays a critical part in managing carrier performance, controlling freight costs, improving service levels, and enhancing end-to-end logistics efficiency through data-driven insights and process improvements.
Key Responsibilities
Transportation Planning & Execution
- Plan and coordinate daily transportation activities, including shipment scheduling, load consolidation, and route optimization
- Ensure timely and accurate execution of shipments (inbound and outbound) aligned with customer requirements and service level agreements (SLAs)
- Manage exceptions such as delays, damages, and delivery issues, ensuring rapid resolution
Carrier Management
- Coordinate with carriers, freight forwarders, and 3PL providers to ensure reliable transportation services
- Monitor carrier performance (OTD, transit times, cost efficiency) and drive continuous improvement
- Support carrier selection, onboarding, and contract compliance
Freight Cost Management
- Analyze freight spend, identify cost-saving opportunities, and support implementation of cost optimization initiatives
- Validate freight invoices, resolve discrepancies, and ensure alignment with agreed tariffs and contracts
- Track and report key cost metrics (cost per shipment, cost per ton/mile, premium freight)
Compliance & Documentation
- Ensure compliance with transportation regulations, trade compliance requirements, and company policies
- Manage shipping documentation, including bills of lading, customs paperwork, and export/import documentation
- Support audit readiness and adherence to regulatory requirements (e.g., DOT, customs regulations)
Systems & Process Management
- Utilize transportation and ERP systems (e.g., SAP, TMS) for shipment planning, tracking, and reporting
- Maintain accurate transportation master data (lanes, transit times, carriers, rates)
- Support system improvements, testing (UAT), and digital tool adoption
Performance Monitoring & Reporting
- Track and report transportation KPIs such as on-time delivery, transit time adherence, freight cost, and carrier performance
- Develop dashboards and performance reports using tools like Power BI or Excel
- Provide insights and recommendations to improve service and reduce logistics costs
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in supply chain, Logistics, Business Administration, or related field
- 3–6+ years of experience in transportation, logistics operations, or supply chain execution
- Hands-on experience with TMS, ERP systems, and freight management processes
- Strong understanding of transportation modes (road, rail, ocean, air) and logistics networks
- Experience working with carriers, 3PLs, and freight providers
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel (e.g., pivot tables, VLOOKUPs, data analysis); experience with SAP or other large-scale ERP systems is a plus.
- Proficiency in Excel and data analysis; experience with Power BI or similar tools preferred
- Knowledge of transportation regulations and compliance requirements
