Position Overview:

We are seeking a skilled Quality Electrical Engineer to support customer and manufacturing quality for electrical and electronic products. The position is responsible for Customer-return investigations, Failure analysis, Internal non-conformance management, Material Review Board (MRB) activities, First-pass-yield improvement, Production quality support, and corrective-action implementation.

The successful candidate will combine hands-on electrical troubleshooting, structured problem-solving, data analysis, and cross-functional collaboration to improve product quality, reliability, and manufacturing performance.

Key Responsibilities:

Failure Analysis and Testing

  • Test customer-returned and internally non-conforming products using approved processes, specifications, equipment, and acceptance criteria.
  • Investigate customer-reported failures and determine root causes at the system, assembly, circuit, or component level, as applicable.
  • Analyze electrical schematics, PCB layouts, test results, and analog or digital signals to identify potential failure mechanisms.
  • Classify failure symptoms, failure modes, and root causes to support statistical analysis, trend identification, and recurrence prevention.
  • Differentiate between isolated and systemic issues and escalate recurring or high-risk concerns.
  • Maintain appropriate product identification, handling, and traceability during investigations.

Internal Quality and Production Support

  • Investigate electrical and electronic non-conformances identified during incoming inspection, assembly, testing, final inspection, or customer-return analysis.
  • Support NCR preparation, investigation, disposition, implementation, and closure.
  • Provide technical recommendations for MRB decisions, including rework, repair, return to supplier, use-as-is, or scrap.
  • Provide hands-on troubleshooting and quality support to Production and Engineering teams.
  • Establish containment actions while investigations and permanent corrective actions are in progress.
  • Analyze first-pass yield, production test failures, rework, scrap, and recurring defects.
  • Support validation of new or modified electrical test methods, fixtures, equipment, and processes.
  • Provide quality input for component substitutions, deviations, concessions, process changes, and engineering changes.

Documentation and Reporting

  • Prepare clear and accurate technical reports containing product information, test conditions, results, analysis, root causes, and corrective actions.
  • Develop Pareto charts and analytical reports covering failure modes, investigation ageing, troubleshooting time, recurrence, and repair costs.
  • Provide data for quality KPIs, scorecards, first-pass-yield reporting, Cost of Non-Quality, and monthly management reports.
  • Create and maintain quality procedures, test instructions, troubleshooting guides, and work instructions.
  • Maintain accurate and traceable records in accordance with applicable quality and document-control requirements.
  • Communicate technical findings clearly to internal teams, customers, and suppliers.

Quality and Process Improvement

  • Support root-cause investigations and corrective actions, including containment, implementation, follow-up, and effectiveness verification.
  • Apply structured problem-solving methods such as the seven basic quality tools, 5-Why, fishbone analysis, Pareto analysis, and 8D.
  • Collaborate with Engineering, Manufacturing, Procurement, Supply Chain, Service, and suppliers to resolve quality issues.
  • Identify recurring issues and recommend improvements to product designs, components, processes, test methods, work instructions, and training.
  • Conduct or support product and process risk assessments and recommend appropriate mitigation actions.
  • Support continuous-improvement initiatives that improve product quality, reliability, first-pass yield, and Cost of Non-Quality.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Electronics, Computer, Mechatronics, or a related Engineering discipline.
  • 3+ years of relevant experience in Electrical Engineering, Quality Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Test Engineering, Product Support Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • Candidates must be legally eligible to work in Canada.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and engineering drawings.
  • Strong technical communication and reporting skills.
  • Ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams to drive quality improvements and resolve technical issues.
  • Working knowledge of structured problem-solving methodologies such as 7QC tools, 5-Why, and 8D.
  • Knowledge of ISO 9001 and IPC standards is considered an asset.
  • Hands-on experience using laboratory equipment such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, hi-pot testers, LCR meters, and similar test equipment.
  • Basic understanding of embedded firmware behaviour and its interaction with electrical hardware.
  • Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing, Measurement System Analysis, FMEA, or other quality-improvement tools is considered an asset.

Preferred:

    • Current registration with APEGA as a P.Eng., or Engineer-in-Training, EIT, is preferred.
    • Experienced EIT candidates who are approaching eligibility to apply for P.Eng. registration are encouraged to apply.
    • Experience with PCBAs, wire harnesses, power electronics, industrial control systems, magnetic systems, or electromechanical products is considered an asset.
