SKF Design Internship — Three Projects, Six Positions
About the Opportunity
SKF is offering six internship positions for motivated design students who want to work hands-on with real digital design challenges. You will join cross-functional teams and contribute to three parallel initiatives:
- improving our design system and rebranding documentation,
- advancing our digital product selection tools, and
- designing part of a software product used by our analysis organisation — with a strong focus on applying and extending SKF’s design system.
Each project offers a distinct focus area, but all roles involve user-centred design, structured process work, and the opportunity to produce strong, portfolio-ready results. We are looking for two interns per project.
Project 1: Design System & Rebranding Documentation (2 interns)
Project Focus
As part of SKF’s rebranding initiative, we need comprehensive documentation explaining how our design systems and components function. You will help ensure consistency and clarity as our teams adopt the new brand identity.
What You’ll Do
- Study and understand SKF’s design systems, components and intended applications
- Create structured documentation showing how design elements work together
- Develop visual examples, usage guidelines, and “do’s and don’ts”
- Collaborate with design and marketing teams
- Contribute to a successful rollout of our updated brand
Project 2: Digital Product Selection Tools (2 interns)
Project Focus
SKF’s digital selection tools help users identify the right products, configurations, and compatible components. You will help improve clarity, usability and decision support in a technical B2B environment, contributing to the expansion of the assortment covered by these tools.
What You’ll Do
- Run a full design process from exploration to refined solutions
- Plan and conduct user interviews and usability sessions
- Collect and synthesize stakeholder insights
- Generate and iterate on concepts that simplify complex workflows
- Work on UI flows, interaction patterns, and information structure
- Plan for testing and validation of your design proposals
Project 3: Software for the Analysis Organisation (2 interns)
Project Focus
The analysis organisation uses specialised software products to support engineering and data-driven work. In this project, you will design part of such a software solution while also applying, adapting and strengthening SKF’s design system within that context. This includes ensuring visual consistency, coherent interaction patterns and a clear user experience in a highly technical domain.
What You’ll Do
- Explore user needs and workflows within the analysis organisation
- Map existing screens, tasks and pain points
- Apply the SKF design system to new or redesigned interface components
- Identify where the design system needs to be expanded or adapted
- Create prototypes, UI flows and interaction patterns
- Plan for user testing and validation with domain specialists
What We’re Looking For (applies to all projects)
- Current enrollment in a design, UX/UI, interaction design, graphic communication or related program
- Ability to explain complex concepts clearly and simply
- Strong visual and/or interaction design skills
- Curiosity, attention to detail, and a structured approach to design
- Basic understanding of user-centred design methods
- Interest in complex systems, technical tools or design systems (depending on project)
Please include a portfolio or examples of previous work with your application, as well as a resume. We also appreciate a brief personal letter.
What You’ll Gain
- Hands-on experience in a global industrial company
- Exposure to real workflows, technical environments and cross-functional collaboration
- A portfolio-ready project demonstrating research, concepting and detailed design
- Experience applying a professional design system to real products
- Practical skills that will strengthen your CV and future opportunities
